Health chiefs have launched an engagement period into trauma care across the Hywel Dda area, but have insisted that trauma care at Bronglais Hospital would not be downgraded under current proposals.

A drop-in event will be held in Aberystwyth as the health board looks to get the views of the public, with the event happening at Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin on Boulevard Saint-Brieuc between 3pm and 6pm on Thursday, 18 July.

With Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales due to be the major trauma centre for south and west Wales and south Powys, the health board needs to now set up trauma care services across the Hywel Dda area.

The board has set out proposals that would see Glangwili Hospital be the local trauma unit, until a possible new hospital is built between Carmarthen and Haverfordwest in future.

But the board has insisted that will not lead to services being downgraded at Bronglais.

A report said the decision to choose Glangwili as the local trauma centre was because it best matched the needs for such a facility.

It adds: “Current trauma and emergency services at Bronglais Hospital and Withybush Hospital would not be downgraded on the basis of this proposal.

“They would continue to deal with less severe traumatic injury and retain the ability to stabilise and transfer patients with moderate or severe trauma to Glangwili Hospital, or the major trauma centre at Cardiff."
