A PETITION, calling for a safe crossing outside a Porthmadog secondary school, has been handed to Gwynedd Council chiefs.

Nia Jeffreys, handed the petition, with over 100 signatures, to Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet member, Cllr Dafydd Meurig, who is responsible for roads in the county.

Nia said she arranged for Cllr Meurig to visit Ysgol Eifionydd and see for himself the dangers of the road outside.

Ysgol Eifionydd headteacher Dewi Bowen also attended the meeting and explained the dangers facing pupils who cross the road daily.

Nia who will be Plaid Cymru’s candidate in the Gwynedd Council elections in May said: “I fear that unless something is done, luck will run out and someone will be seriously hurt or worse outside the school.

“The road outside Ysgol Eifionydd is the main road into Porthmadog and is very busy.

“Cars, lorries, buses and vans travel very quickly on the road, making it dangerous for the young people to cross over.

“Since starting the petition I have heard so many stories of ‘near misses’ outside the school."

The petition began before Christmas and collected over 100 signatures in its first week.
