PLANS to convert a former Grade II listed chapel in Porthmadog into apartments have been supported by town councillors.

A planning proposal has been submitted to Gwynedd Council by Dream Lets Limited, of Colwyn Bay, to convert Capel y Garth into nine residential units with parking provisions.

At this stage the planners are asking the council’s opinion whether an environmental impact assessment is required on the site before a full planning application is submitted.

The building is a Calvinistic Methodist Chapel of 1898, by Owen Morris Roberts of Porthmadog, replacing a chapel of 1845. The chapel closed in 1999.

At a Porthmadog Town Council meeting councillors supported the plans.

Cllr Carol Hayes said: “I fully support these plans, it’s about time old empty buildings in the town are being used, and it is awful seeing them sat there empty. I fully welcome this development, it brings new homes to the town and stops buildings like this sitting empty for any longer.”

In the application the developers say they will preserve the external character of the building.
