A COMMUNITY group dedicated to making “Aberystwyth a nicer place for locals and visitors” is hoping to commission a sculpture for the town, “to highlight marine pollution” and “brighten up the town”.
Caru Aber submitted a proposal to Ceredigion County Council, to gain permission to commission Welsh artist Gideon Peterson to create a dolphin sculpture.
Co-founder of Caru Aber Jeff Jones said the inspiration for the sculpture came after a recent trip to Pembrokeshire: “Caru Aber have been bouncing back and fore ideas on a sculpture to brighten the town up.
“Whilst on a trip to Tenby over the weekend I came across a sculpture by Welsh artist Gideon Peterson in the small village of Amroth.
“The sculpture is made from stainless steel and its contents is full of plastic waste. It is 14ft by 7ft and really draws you closer to see what it is all about.
“It is moved from town to town to spread the message of plastic pollution in our oceans.
“Our proposal to Ceredigion Council is to commission Gideon to do a similar sculpture for Aberystwyth but in the theme of a parent and baby dolphin diving, to represent our Cardigan Bay dolphin pod, to be located somewhere on the promenade.
“We feel there will be more of an impact when the association of plastic waste and our dolphins are together.
“The sculpture will be accompanied by an information board explaining the current plastic crisis and educate the public on how they can turn the tide on plastic waste.”
Jeff also hopes the sculpture would be grant, sponsored, and donations funded.
Ceredigion Council have “received the proposal and will consider it in due course”.
