PUPILS and teachers at a Dwyfor school were forced to stay inside on the hottest day of the year after they were terrorised by “aggressive” seagulls.
Ysgol Eifion Wyn in Porthmadog was forced to keep schoolchildren indoors on at least two occasions last week after it was claimed that adult seagulls were swooping down and attacking pupils, teachers and parents.
It is understood that the aggressive behaviour is because seagulls are very protective of their nesting chicks.
The county council and school have this week confirmed that the problem “has been resolved”.
Dawn Jones, whose six and three-year-old children attend the school, said numerous complaints had been made to the council in the past about the aggressive behaviour of the birds.
“This is not an isolated incident but one the school suffered last year too, but nothing was done then either,” said Mrs Jones said.
“There are seagulls all around the school complex and at present have chicks, this has led to the adult seagulls becoming very aggressive towards anyone who walks around the school yard.
“On Monday afternoon a chick fell from the roof, this has made the whole situation a lot worse as adult birds try and guard the baby bird.
“They are swooping low and aiming at people’s heads, with some claiming to have been hit by the nasty aggressive birds.
“The adults are worried to drop off and collect their children and the children are becoming terrified to go to school tomorrow. Even the staff have been attacked while arriving and leaving work.”
Mrs Jones added that she sympathised with the school leadership but hit out at the county council.
