THE group Scout leader for Machynlleth Beavers, Cubs and Scouts has appealed for more volunteers to get involved after revealing there is a waiting list of youngsters to join the groups.

Julieann Evans, the group leader for the Machynlleth groups, said such was the level of interest from youngsters ranging from six years old to 18, that a waiting list has built up with around 50 youngsters already involved in the groups.

With National Volunteers Week between 1 and 7 June, Julieann said new volunteer leaders would help ensure as many youngsters as possible could get involved in the activities, as well as providing the chance for volunteers to gain recognised leadership qualifications.

The town’s Cub group restarted in April 2013, before the Beaver unit opened shortly afterward, followed by the Scout group in 2014.

The latest development will see a 14 to 18-year-old Explorer group opening in September.

Julieann said: “I was with Brownies and Guides with my daughters, but wanted something for my son to experience, so I set about contacting Scout’s head office about the possibility of starting Cubs for boys in our area.

“Joining scouting builds confidence and self-esteem in children and adults as we are able to offer experiences and skills that maybe they would not be otherwise able to experience.

“It pushes our confidence barriers and we come out the other side stronger and more willing to take on challenges. It’s a lot of fun and sometimes hard work, but the experiences and life memories we gain are so worth it.

“We currently have approximately 50 youths with a waiting list, so are looking to gain more leaders to help with our youth sections."
