Tregaron 8 Pantyffynnon 10

Admiral National League 4 West B

THIS league encounter was played in awful climatic conditions with the initial mizzle turning to a heavy downpour for most of the contest, writes Geraint Morgan.

The ball from the outset was like a bar of soap and both teams struggled to build up phases pf play.

There was nothing to choose between the teams in the open quarter as neither were able to gain any ascendency.

Both sides were guilty of over playing in the poor conditions which resulted in numerous handling errors.

On the 20-minute mark the visitors were able to open the scoring after a lineout close to their opponents’ try line, a good maul was set up which proved impossible to defend, No 8 Stuart Sutherland crossing.

In the second quarter, the Tregaronians kicked better and were able to set up some promising field positions. The lead was cut through an excellent penalty kick by centre Nick Boudier and prior to the orange break a lovely try was scored by scrumhalf Steff Turner.

The ball was won against the head by Martyn Lloyd and the ball was released quickly on the blind side, some good handling allowed Turner to support and score.

With the awful weather in the second half playing attractive rugby became impossible and at times the game became a lottery.

Panty were lucky in that the wind strengthened during this period which meant that their outside half were able to push the home team back into their half.

Midway through the second half the village side from Ammanford took the lead from close quarters.

After a series of pick and drives it was hooker Steffan Morris who scored.

The hosts should have won the contest in the last quarter.

Some clear cut opportunities were created but somehow crossing the whitewash eluded them.

A few lineouts on the Panty 5 meter line were awarded and it seemed that a try was inevitable.

Some penalties were awarded but in the difficult conditions any further attempts at goal were turned down. Steff Turner was adjudged to be the player of the match.
